A Place at the Table: Day 25

Sunday – As promised, I showed the A Place at the Table documentary (the first half of it , at least) to the Sunday afternoon adult Bible study class at church.  We had a nice turn out, I thought (9 adults and 6 kids), including a few folks who don’t normally stay for post-worship activities. A good discusion followed the film, with many expressing complete and utter surprise at the scope of the problem.  Everyone left looking forward to seeing the rest of the documentary – and with their eyes opened to the subcutaneous realities of our society.  I am looking forward to next week, too.

After the film I lingered at church for awhile with my girls.  They were having a grand time playing in one of the classrooms, and I was savoring my feast day.  Lunch was a wonderful curried soup with rice and meatballs and fresh fruit on the side. There was also pizza for the kids (and for my weekly fix).  There were three pieces of pizza left, which normally I would eat for lunch one day, but I’ve decided such leftovers will not be part of my fasting diet.  So, the girls and I sat down and had a “pizza snack” rather than see them go to waste.  Round two of dessert followed, consisting of Kit-Kat bars left over from “Friday Fun Night” a couple of weeks ago.  It was a lot of fun – though I ate way too much, so much so that I didn’t feel too well afterward.

Chapter 4 of Chris Seay’s book is entitled “Fasting and Feasting: Embracing the Rhythm of the Kingdom.”  And that’s what the cycle of fasting and feasting needs to be: a rhythm, not just a pattern.  We all know what it means to break a fast.  But this afternoon’s bout of gluttony has shown me it’s also possible to break a feast: to overindulge in such a way that the feast ceases to be a celebration of God’s good gifts and devolves into base gratification of our appetites – and therefore ourselves.  To faithfully feast, we can’t leave the fast too far behind.

Lord, thank fo all your good gifts.  Help us to celebrate, enjoy, and respect them truly as gifts from you.
